Iya’s first concert was Elton John, now that Ayi is almost four, we think she can handle her first concert. The four of us were at Kia Theater in Cubao as we attended the Nate Ruess Live in Manila. Imagine that? It used to be just Ayel and I, then three years ago Iya joined us. Now it’s Ayi’s turn.
Iya of course enjoyed the whole show. She sang along with the other teens who were there, and even stood on her chair just so she can take a better look. Ayi on the other hand, enjoyed the first two songs. But the rest, she decided to sit it out and asked us if we can go home every 15 minutes. She just came alive when Nate sang We are Young. She, like Ate, sang with the crowd. Wow.
As for us oldies, I somehow felt what Mama experienced when Mama used to go with me to Side A’s concerts. Ang lakas makatanda ng concert na ito. All the kids were on their toes singing songs of Nate (and F.U.N.) while Ayel and I were sitting down trying to wait for the familiar ones. And soon enough we were not to be disappointed. Nate sang Let’s get Crazy (by Prince) and Rocketman (by Elton John). Soon the kids were all sitting down, silent trying to figure out if it was part of Nate’s older album. While here we are, the oldies, mouthing the lyrics to those songs. We are certified O.L.D.
Nate has a good voice and his energy is unbelievable. He sounded a bit like Elton John when he was still young and can really hit those high notes. He looked great too (great, as in I developed a high-school crush on him during his almost an hour performance). I felt bad for Iñigo Pascual when he opened the show, obviously the kids did not like him (they were just too polite to boo him out of the stage), and there he was nervously trying his best to please the crowd.
But more than anything else, I enjoyed the whole experience, because we were all there. Spending time to let Ayi have her first taste of watching concert live is one great experience added to my treasure box.
